How to choose hockey mittens?

Hockey

Hockey gloves, or mittens, protect the hands and joints of the hands from the puck and stick. It is logical that it should remain mobile, the gloves should not hinder the movement and interfere with the control of the stick. Therefore, it is important to choose the right size of gloves.

The distance between finger tips and the lower edge of the elbow pad is the basic parameter to choose from, see the table below for the correspondence of this parameter and the size of the mitts. However, for a person faced with the choice of hockey elbows for the first time, the size of elbow pads suitable for him is probably also a question.

So, in my opinion, it would be more logical to base it on wrist length (from wrist to fingertips), which is the main criterion. In my case, it is 19 cm and the optimal gloves are size 14.

Parameters such as height and weight are consequences rather than selection criteria, and are given as a guide. Despite the recommendations, the best option is of course to try on the different versions before buying.

Protection level
It’s simple, the more the gloves have different inserts: protection of fingers, palm, wrist joint, the less likely to get injured when hitting the puck or opponent’s stick. But in general, between the various manufacturers and price ranges of course there is no such a significant difference in the level of protection, such as in skates. And for the beginner and amateur level will suit even the most basic level tapes.

Comfort
It is important to remember that the muffs should not only provide protection, but also leave the freedom of movement. Therefore, you must be comfortable. The elbow pad and the glove must not adhere too close to each other, otherwise the movements will be constrained, but there must not be a big gap between them.
